Kotor

The fortified city of Kotor on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast is found in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovćen.
Winding streets and squares within its medieval old town makes Kotor a  delightful city for walking.
St. Tryphn's Cathedral also known as the Kotor Cathedral, built in 1166, is an architectural wonder that dominates one of Kotor’s piazzas.
Visitors enjoy climbing up to San Giovanni Fortress for spectacular views of both the city and the Bay of Kotor .
Something a bit different is Kotor’s Cat Museum filled with cat-themed artwork.

Budva

Budva also known as the Budva Riviera features sandy beaches and a trendy, noisy nightlife.
The medieval old town (Stari Grad) with its delightful narrow streets offers stone walls built by the Venetians. 
The Old Town is replete with historical and cultural treasures including a Roman necropolis and an altar, antique pylons, pre-Christian basilica and many churches. The Church of Santa Maria in Punta, for example, was established in the 9th century.
Along with the old comes to the new with luxurious yachts, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Plus sandy, stone and pebbly beaches of all kinds.

Perast

Perast is a small, quant village found on the beautiful Bay of Kotor (Boka Bay). This town, previously one of sailors, is a short distance from the city of Kotor.
Visitors can enjoy Perast’s significant history, old architecture, stunning views, and waterfront restaurants patios.
Only 400 meters from the Perast coast are the islets of St. George (Sveti Đorđe) and Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela) which include majestic churches.

Tivat

Tivat, a coastal town in the Boka Bay in southwest Montenegro, was established on the plateau at the bottom of the Mount Vrmac.

Historically Tivat was a leading seaside resort for the rulers, nobility and poets in the Middle Ages. That tradition has continued today as Tivat is known as one of the most luxurious yachting resorts in the Mediterranean Sea.

Three islands in the Tivat Bay include:

  • The Island of Flowers with the remains of the Holy Archangel Michael Monastery, founded in the 13th century

  • Saint Marco Island

  • Our Lady of Mercy housing the Church of Immaculate Conception.

Herceg Novi 

Anther gem of the Bay of Kotor is Herceg Novi positioned at the foot of Mount Orjen.
Herceg Novi, also called the "City of the Sun", abounds in mimosa trees; the fragrance of the yellow and green mimosas is celebrated via a special festival called Praznik Mimosa.
The Old Town features buildings dating back to the epochs of Sahat – Kula (1667) and Kanli – Kula (1483). Visitors also enjoy the Fortress Spanjola (1538) and Fortress Forte Mare (1687).
A favorite activity in Herceg Novi is kayaking across the bay from the town's marina to the fishing village of Rose.

Petar II Petrović-Njegoš

Petar II Petrović-Njegoš (1813 -1851), Montenegro’s famous poet prince-bishop, was a political leader, diplomat, poet, philosopher and more.
At six feet and eight inches Njegos occupies first place in the country's history in the eyes of Montenegrins.
Appropriately he is buried on Mt. Lovcen one of the nation’s highest peaks.

Nikola Peković

Nikola Peković (born 1986) is a local Montenegrin favorite who played professional basketball player for seven years in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Pekovic is 6 ft 11 in and played at the center position.

 

He has also represented the Montenegrin national basketball team.

Milo Đukanović

Milo Đukanović (born 1962) is a leading Montenegrin politician who has been the President of Montenegro since May of 2018 He has also served as the country's prime minister.
Đukanović leads the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro, originally the Montenegrin branch of the Yugoslavian Communist Party.
An initial ally of Slobodan Milošević, in 1996, he turned against Milošević, favoring the creation of an independent Montenegro. He led those efforts which culminated in a victory in the May 2006 independence referendum.

Nicholas I Petrović

Nicholas I Petrović, (1841 - 1921) was  the prince (1860–1910) and then the only king (1910–18) of Montenegro.
Nicholas is credited with transforming what was then a small principality into a sovereign European nation.
He was known as  a strong leader who fought against the Turks in 1862 and again in 1876.
At the critical Congress of Berlin in 1878, his efforts enabled Montenegro to double in size and gain access to the Adriatic Sea.
Nicholas' efforts came to an end in World War I and his dynasty was formally concluded by a national assembly in November of 1981.

Priganice

One of Montenegro’s better known and popular dishes is Priganice, small doughnuts prepared with flour, water, oil, salt and sugar.
Yogurt or rakija are sometimes added to the dough so that it doesn't soak up too much oil during the frying process.
Priganice can be made in savory or sweet versions, and it is suggested to serve them warm, then pair them with fresh cheese, honey, fruit jams, or sugar.

SKADER LAKE CARP

Skadar Lake is the biggest freshwater basin in South East Europe and a favorite dish from the lake is its delicious carp.
Skadar Lake carp is eaten either deep fried in vegetable oil, grilled or roasted with dried fruits.
It is also smoked on a fire, and then marinated in oil with garlic and herbs.
The  “krap u tavu” version is a meal comprised of fish, vegetables and a several sort of fruits-apple, quince and dried plums.

Ajvar

Ajvar is a red pepper and tomato paste that is made into a spreadable form and served as an appetizer or even as a snack.
It is recommended to use sweet peppers, aka Cubanelle peppers, Itallian peppers or Banana peppers. While the color of the peppers does not make a difference in the taste of Ajvar, it does make a difference in its color.
Montenegrins enjoy Ajvar together with olives, slices of toast, bread sticks or bread of any other kind.

Lovćen

An absolute must site when visiting Montenegro is the imposing black mountain of Lovćen and its national park.

 

The dense forest covered majestic mountain is the inspiration behind the name of Montenegro and the burial site of its greatest ruler.

The mausoleum of poet prince Petar II Petrović-Njegoš the acclaimed ruler who brought modernity and centralization to Montenegro is located on Jezerski vrh.

 

For the adventurous types quad biking and zip-lining are two daring Mount Lovcen activities. Hiking and cycling are also offered for the less adventurous.

Our Lady of the Rocks

Our Lady of the Rocks, also known as the The Island Gospa od Skrpjela,  is is one of two gorgeous islands in the bay of Boka Kotorska.

 

The island is an artificial one  with a church built by Venetians in 1630.

 

Every year a procession called  fašinada takes place on the 22nd July to ensure the island holds strong.

Ostrog Monastery

Over 100,000 visitors of all faiths visit the 17th-century monastery Ostrog Monstary every year.

 

The monastery is set into a steep cliff against an almost vertical background.

The monastery, one of three most visited Christian destinations in world,  features a cave-like chapel and preserves the sanctity of Saint Basil the  Orthodox Christian Saint of Miracles.

Biogradska Gora

Biogradska Gora is a rare rain forest and a national park surrounding the fantastic Beiogradkso Lake.
It is said that local rulers made sure that not a single tree was ever cut down in the park.
This natural reservation has preserved many plants and hundreds of animal species. It was reported that there are 26 different habitats of plants with 220 different plants, 150 kinds of birds and 10 kinds of mammals and 86 kinds of trees.
The jewel of the site is the Biogradsko lake with its 230.000 square meters at a height 1094 meters above the sea level.

Saint George

'Ostrvo Sveti Đorđe, also known as Saint George's Island, is one of the two islands found off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor.
With a rich history, this beautiful island was once conquered by the Venetians as well as the French.
The island is surrounded by high mountains. and features live cypresses, ramparts and watchtowers. The church of Sv. Đorđe “Sanctus Georgius de Gulfo” dates back to the 12th century.
St George island can only be reached by boat and there are a number of tourist boats taking visitors to this phenomenal islet.

Lipa Cave

Lipa Cave one of the largest caves in Montenegrois is found in the mountains near the  village of Cetinje, east of Budva.
The karst cavern is also one of Montenegro's most popular tourist attractions.
You can start your visit with a ride on a miniature train through the wild countryside to the cave's entrance. A guided tour takes visitors through the 3.5 kilometers of passages and the halls which are carved by thousands of years of dripping water.

Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park, located in the Dinaric Alps, is an extremely popular natural attraction and home to 18 glacial lakes.
It also features the Tara River, and the world's second deepest canyon, the Tara Canyon.
The park boasts thick areas of forest and a range of wildlife including brown bears, wild boars, and over 150 types of different species of birds.
Winter activities include skiing and snowboarding while in the summer visitors enjoy hiking, camping and whitewater rafting.

Lake Skadar

Lake Skadar located on the border with Albania, is the largest natural lake in all of Southern Europe
Villages on the lake date back to the 13th century and have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The southwestern shore includes the Murici Beach, which is a beautiful stretch of shoreline found against the Rumija Mountain Range.

Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan, located on the famous Budva Riviera, is a rocky island full of terracotta-roofed houses connected to the mainland via a narrow isthmus.
In the 1950s this small fishing area was transformed into a luxury hotel-town Among its famous and glamorous guests were Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Kirk Douglas.
In 2010, Sveti Stefan Hotel reopened its doors once again as a member of the Aman Resorts.

San Giovanni Fortress

A fortress of one thousand three hundred and fifty-five steps, San Giovanni Fortress dates from the 9th century.
The hike up starts with the serpentine paths from the east part of Kotor old Town and leads to the very top of the fortress at 280 meters above sea level.
The views from the top of the fortress take in the Bay of Kotor, Mt. Vrmac and Kotor old town.
