Kopor

Once part of the Venetian Empire, Kopor is a port city in Slovenia, on the Adriatic coastline.
Kopor's medieval old town centers around Titov Trg, Tito Square, with its Venetian-influenced landmarks such as the Praetorian Palace.
Visitors can climb up the bell tower of Campanile, part of the 12th century Cathedral of Assumption, for spectacular views of the city below.
Kopor's e Da Ponte Fountain is a replica of Venice's famed Rialto Bridge.
There is a free public access beach near the Koper Marina that is ideal for swimming or just enjoying your day in the sun.

Izola 

Just 7 kilometers south of Kopor, the old fishing town Izola offers another Adriatic coast alternative for visitors.
The town has its own Venetian charm, a large marina, narrow old winding streets and an array of restaurants and bars.
Izola’s most beautiful building is the late-baroque palazzo below the Parish Church of St Maurus. This was built between 1775 and 1781 and the mansion has windows and balconies adorned with stuccoes and iron grilles painted light blue.

Piran

Located on the southwestern tip of Slovenia, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, the city of Piran is known as a popular resort hot spot.
The city will remind visitors of Italy, which rings true, as Piran was part of the Venetian Empire for more than five hundred years.
There is a long pier with plenty of Venetian architecture. Tartini Square is flanked by the Gothic Venetian House and the frescoed Tartini House; the latter is the birthplace of famous violinist Giuseppe Tartini.
Piran offers a wide range of activities with sport activities, galleries, an aquarium and the relaxing Lepa Vida spa located in the middle of the Sečovlje salt-pans.

Portorož

The resort town of Portorož on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast boasts a range of therapeutic treatments and wellness centers based on the mud and brine from the nearby Sečovlje Salina salt pans.
The central Portorož Beach with its wooden piers has a wide and sandy stretch.
Some attractions include the hilltop Church of St. Bernardin, a former monastery from the 15th century; and to the south there is Seča Park home to Forma Viva with numerous stone sculptures.

Ankaran

The coastal town of Ankaran is located near the border with Italy in northwestern Slovenia.
Ankaran has one of the largest RV camps in Slovenia and is situated next to the Debeli Rtič Landscape Park. Visitors can enjoy the park's trails including the educational trails that run along vineyards, where farming mechanization and agrotechnical works are found. 
The beaches have earned their wonderful reputation and the area is welcomed by scuba divers for the colorful treasures under the sea.

Goran Dragić

Goran Dragić began his professional basketball career in 2003, at the young age of 17 playing in the Slovenian Second Basketball League with KD Ilirija.

By 2007 Dragić joined the Slovenian club Union Olimpija helping the team win the Slovenian League championship. 

Dragic signed on with the Miami Heat NBA team playing with superstars such as Dwayne Wade.

It is reported that Dragic's $ 90 million NBA contract with the Heat made him the 20th richest Slovenian in the world.

Grega Žemlja

Grega Žemlja is a retired Slovenian tennis player who won five singles titles and one doubles title on the ATP Challenger Tour.
In 2012 he reached the 3rd round of the US Open, the first Slovenian male player ever to reach that stage in a Grand Slam tournament.
He was also the first Slovene tennis player to earn a spot in the TOP 50 tennis rankings.
Zemlja represents his country as a member of the Slovenia Davis Cup team.

Slovenian-born Melanija Knavs, now Melania Trump is the second-ever First Lady of the United States to be born outside of the United States.
Wife of Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, Melania is a former fashion model born in Novo Mesto.
According to some sources First Lady Trump speaks five languages, her native Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian, English, French, and German.

Ivan Cankar

Ivan Cankar, (1876 – 1918), was Slovenia’s premier novelist and playwright as well as an accomplished poet and political activist.
He was known for his initial works which defended the oppressed with satirical attacks against those who exploited them.
His first published work, the volume of poetry Erotika (1899; “Erotica”), was extremely controversial to the extent that the bishop of Ljubljana bought up all the copies and had them burned.
A prolific writer, Cankar was also an outspoken social commentator on issues of socialism and “Yugoslavism” (the movement to unite Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes in a new independent and democratic state).
He is clearly the most translated of all Slovenian authors.

Ajdovi žganci

Ajdovi žganci is a  very traditional Slovenian dish made of buckwheat flour and water dressed with biscuits. 

 

Originally it was made for breakfast to provide energy for farmers facing a long and hard day of work.

 

When served without the cracknels one gets a very healthy dish that goes especially well with sour milk, mushroom soup, cabbage or a chicken stew.

Potica

Potica is a popular Slovenian dessert made of dough and filled with various fillings.
There are more than 80 different types of fillings, with tarragon (»pehtranova«), walnut, cracknels (»ocvirki«) and poppy seeds being the most famous.
It is suggested that if you are entertaining and serving Potica simply cut each one-inch slice into 9 cubes (like tic-tac-toe) and place them on a serving dish or tray.

Močnik

Močnik is an old, traditional Slovenian dish; it's a porridge. where cereals such as buckwheat, corn, wheat, millet, rye, or oats are cooked in milk, cream, or sour cream.

 

Močnik dates back to the Middle Ages and a sweet version of it was a favorite of the Slovenian nobility.

Lake Bled

The sole island in Slovenia is located in the middle of a glacial alpine lake called Bled, one of the most picturesque attractions in the country.
Lake Bled is found in the Julian Alps only 35 kilometers from Ljubljana International Airport.
Visitors enjoy renting a traditional “pletna” boat, climbing the 99 stone-step staircase on the island, visiting the St. Mary of the Assumptions church or walking leisurely around the Lake. Another big hit are the healing thermal springs.
Bled castle, a 17th century structure, at a height of 456 feet provides a very beautiful view of the lake and area.

Postojna Cave

Postojna Cave is a unique, must see, 24,340 meter long karst cave system is southwestern Slovenia. 
The caves were created by the Pivka River.
The 20 kilometers of chambers and hallways includes galleries, some of which have ceilings nearly 50 meters high.
Visitors can take the train tour that takes one through the cave system; or walk through this natural wonder.
Nearby is a medieval castle, an engineering marvel, built into the side of a cave.

Triglav

Triglav, rises up to a majestic height of nearly  2,900 meters making it the highest mountain in Slovenia and the highest peak of the Julian Alps.

 

The mountain is the centerpiece of Triglav National Park, the spot where three Slovenian rivers, Sava Dolinka, Sava Bohinjka and Soča ,originate.

Soča, considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, originates in the Trenta valley and runs through canyons, gorges and amazing waterfalls. Soča is known for its deep, clear and emerald color waters.

When spring arrives the banks of the river is full of fly-fishermen eagerly trying to catch some famous Soča trout. In the summer, visitors enjoy kayaking, canoeing, canyoning, bungee jumping, swimming, rafting and hiking.

Maribor

One of the largest cities in Slovenia, Maribor is located on the border with Austria.
Maribor's claim to fame is its outstanding wine industry and in the town's center one can see what is claimed to be the oldest grapevine in the world.
In addition to the delightful wineries, other attractions are the Mani Square and Castle Square that have a wide variety of ancient structures.
The Drava River that runs through the city adds to the overall charm of Maribor.
The area around Maribor features ski slopes, hiking and mountain trails and  the green forests of Pohorje in this eastern most part of Alpine Slovenia.

Predjama Castle

For over 800 years the mysterious, alluring and stunning Predjama Castle has been perched right smack in a 123 meter high rocky cliff.

 

Adding to this magnificent site is the Lokva river which disappears underground below the castle.

This castle is also termed as the Renaissance castle and the architectural style is mainly Gothic.

Logar Valley

Logar Valley, “Logarska dolina“,  located in northern Slovenia south of the border of Austria is a beautiful glacial valley.
The Logar valley is well known for its many waterfalls; the most famous is the 295 foot high Rinka fall.
In the winter visitors daringly climb the frozen waterfalls, and participate in cross-country or downhill skiing and sledding.
Summertime activities include hiking, biking, climbing and taking in the local high-mountain farms.

Solkan Bridge

The Solkan Bridge is located near Nova Gorica  in western Slovenia and offers great views of the turquoise Soča River and the entire beautiful Soča Valley.
The bridge is the longest train bridge built solely out of stone with 4,533 stone blocks at a length of nearly 200 meters.
The bridge was designed by architect Rudolf Jaussner and engineer Leopold Örley, with an 80 m stone arch.
Adventurous visitors can, bungee jump off the bridge for a one of a kind way to admire the beauty of the Soča Valley.

Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle is a castle complex standing on Castle Hill right above downtown Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital.

 

The castle was originally a medieval fortress, constructed in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 12th century. 

The castle's Outlook Tower and ramparts offer some of the most beautiful views of the city. Inside the castle one can enjoy a museum exhibition on Slovenian history, a puppet museum, and historical displays such as the Chapel of St George, the Prison, and a video presentation called Virtual Castle.

The Ljubljanica river runs around the old castle hill adding to the charm of the city full of little bars, restaurants, bridges, old architecture, churches, and museums.

Lipica Stud Farm

For a unique and different experience visit Lipica Stud Farm, established in 1580, making it the oldest stud farm with continuous horse breeding in the world.
Horses at Liipica were initially mostly bred for military purposes. These strong and lithe horses were crossbred with Spanish, Italian and Arab horses and after 200 years the Lipizzaner breed, which is nowadays renowned worldwide, was created. Today Lipica Stud Farm is an important cultural and historical landmark of Slovenia.
There are entertaining guided tours of the Lipikum museum and one can see the horses as they race across the plush meadows.
The farm also features impressive shows of the classical riding school.

Celje

One of the oldest cities in Slovenia is Celje, perched on the banks of the Savinja River.
The popular attraction in Celjie is the enormous castle, which was built in the 14th century and offers views of the city and beyond including ones of the Savinja and Voglajna rivers.
The refurbished castle features the four-storey Friderik Tower.
Walking through Old Celje, the historic downtown where buildings date back to medieval times, once experiences the cobblestone roads,  with its eateries and traditional architecture.
